As we become more aware of afterlife signs, we might start looking for them everywhere. And while, sometimes you may trust a sign that isn't truly from Spirit, that's okay. Give yourself permission to accept any sign that brings you comfort. Whether it's true Spirit communication or not, it can still bring you peace. More often than not, though, when you're longing for a trace of Spirit, the signs will be real. Your loved ones will feel joy when they present something meaningful and see you recognize it.
I've found the pre-sleep, dream, and wakeful states are when we're most aware of the afterlife. In these moments, our minds are quiet, making it easier to receive spirit messages without usual daily distractions. This is when our loved ones can give us profound, impactful experiences and messages.
When my mother passed in 2015, no simple message or a random scent of her perfume was enough to comfort me. I needed solid proof and was only willing to trust what I could clearly see. While this isn't for everyone—seeing an apparition can be quite scary—I welcomed it. One night, I was jolted awake by a loud noise and saw a bright, dark pink apparition at the foot of my bed. I immediately recognized it as my mother's energy! She was holding a small statue of Saint Joseph—the very one I had recently given her brother as a keepsake from her belongings. I spoke to her for what seemed like a long time, but was likely just seconds. Then she disappeared. This form of spirit communication brought me the peace I needed and undeniable proof our energy lives on!

For example, I've asked my mother to show me hummingbirds because she loved birdwatching and had a hummingbird feeder for as long as I can remember. Hummingbirds, being more elusive than common birds, serve as a clear, evidential sign.
In late 2022, during a particularly difficult day, I asked my mother for a sign. Within an hour, one of my regular clients called and said, “I was sitting outside, and a hummingbird kept dive-bombing my head. It happened several times, and then I felt the urge to call you!” That was the sign I had asked for—my mother had come through again from her place in the afterlife.
As you begin to recognize signs from the spirit realm, approach them with healthy skepticism to help you grow and gain awareness. A familiar scent, like Grandma's cookies or Grandpa's cigars, a nature sign like a hummingbird, or even a coin found in an unusual place can all be comforting and meaningful. Embrace these signs as gifts from the afterlife.
