How To Survive The New Friend Search At Any Age

How To Survive The New Friend Search At Any Age

Making friends may sound easy to some people, yet it can be extremely difficult for other people in specific age ranges, lifestyles and demographic. Having friends throughout life is very important and the connections we establish may very well turn into lifelong trusting relationships.

It can be more difficult to meet new friends and keep them after the age of 30, as many people are settling down with a partner, having kids and setting themselves up for a lifetime of activity and responsibility.

Other individuals who are not into settling down with a growing family may be married to their work and they may actually love spending day in and day out working. And then there are retired individuals or those who fall into an older group where isolation can become a difficulty.

If you have been wondering how you can make new friends at any age and create strong bonds that will last overtime, you can! You just need to make a few minor changes to the way you live your life right now. Here are some tips on how to make new friends at any age and keep them in your life over time.

Get Away From The Screen and Out Into Life

It is easy at any age to fall into the isolation game. When we get wrapped up with devices and advanced technology it is easy to let the world just disappear behind you. This won't help you make any lifelong relationships or benefit you in the friendship department. Make a conscious effort to get out into the day and be around people. It doesn't matter if this means going to a local grocery store, or hanging around the laundry mat while you get your laundry done. Be around people. You never know when someone might strike up a conversation with you, or when you might meet a new friend.

Get In Touch Once A Day and Learn To Keep In Touch

Try to be in touch with one of your current friends or someone you just recently met at least once a day or week. Make plans to have lunch or coffee. By keeping in touch, you can practice your bonding skills. It doesn't matter what age group you fall into, as it is just as hard to find time to meet up with friends in your 30's as it is in your 60's. People are busy. It is just the way life is now and not many of us have the luxury of having ultimate freedom written across our schedules. This doesn't mean you can't work at it. By keeping in touch, you will engage with others and keep your communication skills flowing. You may even meet friends through friends as some people are more than happy to share friends and connect people.

Learn to Reject Rejection

Let's face it. Sometimes people just don't connect or mesh well with each other. You may have thought you made a cool new friend and that you will spend countless lunches and pedicure moments talking each other's ears off. Sometimes you may meet a new person who seems like they are ready for a new friendship, but as soon as you try to meet up with them the following week, they are missing in action. Try not to take rejection so personal and understand that she or he might of just had other things happening within their busy life. Move onto meeting your next new friend.

Join A New Community Group

This is an excellent way to make new friends who share some of the same interests as you. Whether you join a cooking group for those over 50, or a young poets groups for women under 30, there is always a group that you will fit into. Joining a new group offers a sense of community and all around wellness.

Easy Does It, Take It Slow

When you meet a new friend, take it slow. Don't push your new buddy into anything and allow the friendship to blossom and flourish. True friendships need time to grow and bonds are best when created over time and effort. Don't act needy even if you feel needy and alone. Enjoy the casual meet ups and conversations and share little bits about your life at a slow pace. If you get along, it will all fall into place.
